Support My Journey
This spring, I am taking part in tenth anniversary of the Stride to Turn the Tide for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. As many of you know I have 5 grandchildren who are the loves of my life. They visit, sleep over, have camps and birthday parties with us but I could never imagine in my wildest dreams how I, with all the luxury my life affords, could raise them on my own.
Yet that is what my African sisters do ,sometimes with 12 or more in a hut with no hydro or financial support. Over the 10 years of the Stride to Turn the Tide the grandmothers of Sub-Saharan Africa, with the funds we have raised, have become more self sufficient, developing health care and businesses and becoming known as agents of change but there is still a long way to go.
That is why I continue to stride in solidarity with African grandmothers who walk, every day, for every imaginable reason. They walk to harvest their crops. They walk from home to home to comfort the ill and isolated. They walk to market to sell vegetables and crafts. They walk to pick up their grandchildren from school. They walk to collect water from a distant well. They walk to property tribunals to take back their land. They walk to their counselling groups.
Here in North America we have become complacent about the AIDS epidemic as access to medications is no problem but in Africa the AIDS pandemic continues to rage. That's why I am walking and have a fundraising goal. I ask you – our friends, family, and colleagues – to sponsor us. Please click on the 'Donate Now' button above the thermometer. It’s simple, fast and totally secure. Every dollar will make a difference to the grandmothers of Africa and the children in their care. So, please dig deep and donate now. Thank you!
